Young filmmaker makes first short film on the increasing number of suicides in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The pristine islands spread across Bay of Bengal and entering Indian Ocean have got there first short film. The film focuses on the issue of increasing suicides in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
With almost one person killing themselves every 40 second suicide is escalating as one of the major issue of not only India but across the globe.
And to fight against the raging evil through the means of creativity, 25 year old K Raja Kumarr, a film maker hailing from the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands produced a short film titled as "Say no to suicide" to raise awareness among the mass especially the youth. Startled by the logistics of the number of suicide case coming to light each year with more than 150 deaths from his native land of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, he strongly felt the need to raise awareness among the youths who indulge in alcohol or drugs to overcome the pain of loss.
"Every 40 second one person kills himself and over eight lakh people lose their precious lives every year. Of these 1.35 lakh are residents of India. Over 150 suicides are recorded in Andaman and Nicobar Islands each year. This is on a rise and shocking too," said Kumarr.
The short film which intends to create awareness against the perilous issue has already gone viral in the Islands with more than 13,000 likes and still counting. It is gaining popularity across the social media platform in the region with each passing day. Former Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lt. Gen. AK Singh appreciated the film by hailing it as "Great and relevant effort. I will ask Social Welfare department to incorporate the video in our effort against suicides". Born in a Tamil family K. Raja Kumarr had his initial schooling at Port Blair but shifted to a boarding school in Chennai where he developed a fondness for music and movies.
He found his calling for films at a Short film festival Competition where he was judged as the winner for a 10-minute short film, Raja discontinued Engineering and started pursuing visual communication. However, his road towards success was not at all easy as his parents could not associate with his job prospect.
With his talent, budding film maker Raja, made a fair living out of the job opportunities in Chennai but his life took a rough turn when he arrived to try his luck in Mumbai.
The city of dreams did turn into a nightmare for Raja as he struggled to land a job. But with time, he overcome his hardships and became an ad film maker.
With 48 ad films lined up, Raja is a successful film maker and believes if he can overcome his struggle, anyone can do so. "But in reality, do we really care about the word suicide or the emotions related to it", that's what Raja questions to those who stay ignorant towards the social evil. Raja is now making all possible efforts to spread awareness and reduce the number of suicides, "If you kill yourself you're also going to kill the people who love you".My work
